AI for Holiday Savings: How it Can Help You Save Money

< Back to Money Minute

The holiday season is here! A season of joyous moments. But let’s be honest: it can also be financially stressful. This year, I’ve amped up my use of AI for personal use and discovered it’s an excellent resource for simplifying life and saving money. Tools like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot offer practical ways to cut costs and streamline planning. From budgeting and meal prep to gift ideas and travel, here are five ways to use AI for holiday savings and keep your season stress-free.

1. Easily Create a Smart Holiday Budget

Start by asking your favorite AI tool to build a holiday budget. Try a prompt like:
“Act like a financial expert. I have $X for holiday expenses. Create a conservative, yet thoughtful holiday budget.”

Following the budget can help you stay on track and prevent overspending. ChatGPT can also review your income and expenses and automatically create a clear, realistic budget, even suggesting adjustments like reducing travel or entertainment costs to free up extra cash.

2. Plan Thanksgiving Meals on a Budget

Holiday meals can be pricey and time-consuming, but AI can help you stretch your grocery dollars. Ask AI to plan your Thanksgiving menu based on what you already have and your spending limit. For example:
“I have a whole chicken, canned vegetables, and $150. Help me plan a Thanksgiving dinner and build a grocery list.”

Copilot can generate recipes, portion sizes, and estimated costs, minimizing unnecessary purchases and waste.

3. Track Holiday Expenses with Copilot

Microsoft Copilot in Excel makes it easy to build a holiday expense tracker. Monitor spending across categories like gifts, travel, food, and decorations. Copilot summarizes your spending and flags where you’re off-target—helping you stay aligned with your budget. Need a handy resource while shopping? Try our Fritter Finder.

4. Find Holiday Deals

ChatGPT, especially in Agent Mode, can search and test promo codes across shopping sites. AI-assisted tools often uncover working discount codes for electronics, travel, etc., saving you time and money.

5. Find Budget-Friendly Gift Ideas

For thoughtful gifts that won’t break the bank, AI to the rescue. Ask for suggestions based on your budget and the recipient’s interests. For example:
“Give me gift ideas under $50 for a grandmother who loves reading and coffee.”

You’ll get fast, creative, and cost-conscious ideas that make gift-giving affordable and thoughtful.
Bottom line: Using AI for holiday savings isn’t just smart, it’s stress-relieving. With the right prompts, you can budget better, shop smarter, and keep the holiday spirit alive without financial strain.
