As the first free credit counseling service in the U.S. when we started in 1955, our purpose was to aid families who were overwhelmed with credit card debt through budgeting and financial guidance. We became the model for agencies across the country to help their residents.
In 1967 we were incorporated as Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Greater Columbus in order to broaden our scope of services to better serve our communities. Unprecedented growth and need resulted in us becoming a national organization in 2009. At that time, we took on a national name of Apprisen which reflects our purpose perfectly as the word “apprise” means to inform, make aware of, and enlighten.
By 2012 we were able to counsel individuals and families in all 50 states. Now, in 2015, we celebrate 60 Years of Service and look back on the successes we have had and the privilege it has been to be a part of strengthening communities and increasing financial literacy all over our great nation.
I have had the great pleasure of being a part of the Apprisen family as a counselor since August 2004 when I researched the best of the best and called the Chief Operations Officer personally to express my interest in joining the team. Since then I have counseled every type of person and family imaginable. After all, money affects us all and no one is immune to the need of having financial goals or periodically suffering from financial hardships.
I recently received a card which humbled me to my core from a past client whom I counseled and put on a path to become free of credit card debt in December 2009. Her accomplishment is the exact reason why I, and my Apprisen family, continue to grow and transform our services to meet the needs of our nation by paving a path of financial empowerment.
