Frequently Asked Questions

Will my information be reported to the IRS or credit reporting agencies?

Apprisen does not report your financial information to the IRS or any of the credit reporting agencies.

What are your fees?

There is no charge for your initial counseling session with a Certified Financial Counselor to assess your financial situation. If you decide to participate in a Debt Management Program (DMP), there are nominal fees to cover the cost of maintaining your program. These fees are subject to state regulations but will never exceed a $35 one-time set up and a $35 monthly fee. Apprisen does not deny service if you are unable to pay. In cases of financial hardship, fees may be reduced or eliminated.

How are you funded?

As a non-profit organization, we rely on grants, voluntary contributions from creditors who participate in our debt management plans, donations from financial institutions, and client fees.

What are your hours of operation?

We have representatives available 24/7 to answer your calls. Our counselors are available Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00pm and Saturday from 10:00am to 3:00 p.m. EST. Our Bankruptcy Department hours of operation are Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. EST.

How do I access your services?

We offer face-to-face and telephone counseling — simply call 800.355.2227 to schedule an appointment. You can also complete an online application to submit preliminary information. Where we have local offices, we can provide outreach and financial education. Go to our Learning Center for information on how to bring workshops to your community and to access additional resources and tools to assist you.

If you have a disability, language barrier or any impairment that may affect access to services, please call us at (800) 355-2227 so that we can assist in making alternative arrangements.

What should I bring to my initial counseling session?

To get the most from your counseling session, it is very important to bring:

  • A list of current living expenses — items such as rent or mortgage payments, utility bills, cell phone bill, school loans, car loans, etc.
  • Statements no older than 60 days from your creditors
  • Pay stub or other income information

How does the Online Application work?

Through our online application, you submit preliminary information that gets routed directly to a counselor. Within two business days, a Certified Financial Counselor will contact you to discuss your situation and provide advice and guidance on possible solutions.

Why is it important to work with Certified Financial Counselors?

Our Certified Financial Counselors are trained to work with you to assess your specific financial situation and create an action plan that will help you achieve your financial goals. Our counselors are certified through the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC). As part of this certification, they must pass a series of exams and continue with ongoing education to maintain their certified status.

Is counseling confidential?

Anything discussed or gathered in a session is confidential. All of your records are kept in a secure location. Your financial information will not be shared with anyone unless we have your written permission.

What areas do you serve?

We are able to provide services in all 50 states. In 7 of those states, there are more than 15 local offices where you can meet face to face with a Certified Financial Counselor.

How long will my counseling session take?

The length of a session depends on the type of counseling needed.

  • A budget, credit or housing counseling session by phone or in person takes about 60-90 minutes.
  • A bankruptcy counseling session usually takes 90-120 minutes.

How can you help me?

Apprisen can help assess your financial strengths and weaknesses, and provide you with clearly-defined action steps to improve your personal financial situation. During a confidential, one-on-one counseling session, our Certified Financial Counselors can assist you with issues concerning your budget, debt, housing or bankruptcy. Through financial education, community resources, debt management and advice, we can work together to find the best solutions for you.
